The main breaker sets your home’s capacity. Common upgrades go from 100 or 150 amps to 200 amps; larger homes may need 400.
Each 120-volt circuit takes one space. EV chargers, ranges, dryers and heat pumps run on 240 volts and take two. A new panel leaves room for what’s next.

Older panels
Your lights may still work. The real question is whether your breakers will still trip when they need to. Some older panel designs have documented problems; others are simply worn out.
What a breaker is supposed to do: when a circuit is overloaded, it trips and cuts the power. A worn breaker, or one with a loose or corroded connection at the bus bar, can stay on while that connection heats up. Illustration, not a real measurement.
These signs can have more than one cause. Only an on-site check can tell you which.
No recall · documented connection problems
Installed in many homes in the West through the 1970s. The breakers can lose contact with the bus bar, overheat and arc, and a breaker that has melted onto the bus may not trip.
How to spot it: “Zinsco” or “Sylvania” on the label inside the panel door.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission closed its investigation in 1983 without a recall. It found that some Stab-Lok breakers failed certain UL calibration tests, but said its data did not establish a serious risk.
How to spot it: “Federal Pacific Electric” or “FPE” on the label, and “Stab-Lok” on the breakers.

Not every Challenger panel. In 1988 Challenger offered to replace Type HAGF-15 and HAGF-20 GFCI breakers made between February 22 and April 29, 1988, because their ground-fault protection may not work.
How to spot it: “Challenger” on the label; the affected breakers are GFCI types HAGF-15 and HAGF-20.

Fuses aren’t dangerous by themselves, but older fuse boxes and panels were sized for homes with far fewer appliances. Corrosion, loose connections and the wrong size fuse or breaker add up over the years.
How to spot it: Screw-in or cartridge fuses, rust on the box, or a panel that’s original to an older home.

We install new subpanels for garages, ADUs and home additions, and we replace and upgrade old ones. A subpanel adds breaker space where you need it. It doesn’t add power to your home: it shares what your main electrical service can supply.
Many homes need both: a bigger service at the main panel and a subpanel where the new circuits go. We decide with a load calculation at your free on-site estimate, not by guessing over the phone. If your project also needs a larger service or a new meter, your utility must approve and schedule its part. We coordinate that with you, and the utility sets the dates.
