A GFCI (ground-fault circuit interrupter) is the outlet with TEST and RESET buttons. It’s there for the places where electricity and water meet.
1. Normal. The GFCI measures the current going out to the appliance and the current coming back. They match.2. A fault. A damaged cord or water lets some current leak to ground, through the water or through a person. Now less comes back than went out.3. Trip. The GFCI senses the difference and cuts the power in a fraction of a second, before the leak can hurt anyone. RESET pops out.4. Fix the cause, then reset. Once the fault is gone, press RESET and the power is back. Test your GFCIs once a month: press TEST, then RESET.
Today’s code requires GFCI protection wherever water is nearby. Many older homes don’t have it. We add it with GFCI outlets or GFCI breakers, whichever fits your home.
Offices, shops, restaurants and commercial kitchens too. See commercial services.

From one outlet that stopped working to new outlets for a remodel, a garage or an outdoor kitchen.

Heat at a connection. Stop using it and call.

Plugs that fall out, cracked faces, no ground.
Outlets that spark, buzz, feel warm or trip again and again belong here too. See troubleshooting.

Straight answers to what customers ask us most. Still wondering about something? Call (844) 425-1889.
There may still be a fault on the circuit, such as water in an outdoor outlet or a damaged cord. No power may be reaching it: check the breaker. Or the GFCI may have worn out; they don’t last forever. Unplug everything on it and try RESET again. If it still won’t reset, call us.
One GFCI can protect other outlets further along the circuit, even in another room. Press RESET on the GFCIs in nearby bathrooms, the kitchen, the garage and outside, and check the panel for a tripped breaker. Still dead? A loose connection at an outlet earlier on the circuit is a common cause.
Yes, the right way. A three-prong outlet needs a ground. We run a new grounded circuit, or add GFCI protection where the code allows it, labeled as having no equipment ground.
Both give the same protection. A GFCI outlet protects itself and the outlets after it on the circuit; a GFCI breaker in the panel protects the whole circuit. We recommend the one that fits your home and how you’ll reset it.
Once a month. Press TEST: the power should go off. Then press RESET to bring it back. If it doesn’t trip, or won’t reset, have it replaced.
Yes: USB and USB-C outlets, weather-resistant outdoor outlets with in-use covers, and 240-volt outlets for dryers, ranges, shop tools and EV chargers. See EV charger installation.
Yes. Heat means a bad connection or an overloaded outlet. Stop using it, turn off the circuit at the panel if you can do it safely, and call. If you see smoke or flames, get out and call 911.
